Splined cranks are much stronger than cotterless cranks (AKA square taper cranks) because they create a much sturdier, secure interface between the crank arm and the spindle. That makes splined cranks superior for certain types of unicycles that will be ridden hard, like mountain unicycles or unicycles used for touring, commuting or racing.
