On December 9, 2012, two New York unicycle riders became the first individuals to cross the Florida Keys on one-wheel. A sculptor and a clown helped Sculpture Key West kick off their season in an unusual way; Robert Hickman and Keith Nelson of New York pedaled the distance of the Florida Keys Highway on unicycle, The Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail Unicycle Tour.
The unicycle tour began Tuesday, December 4, 2012, when Hickman and Nelson rolled off in Key Largo at Mile Marker 106.5 and ended at 4:30 pm on Sunday, December 9, 2012 at Mile Marker 0. During the six days, Hickman and Nelson pedaled over 130 miles and crossed 55 bridges. Events took place along the way to celebrate the tour, visit local establishments, and promote Sculpture Key West, cycling the Overseas Highway, and Arts in the Florida Keys.

As a sculptor and rail fan, Robert Hickman is drawn to transportation systems, creating work for train stations, maritime, pedestrian, and vehicular traffic areas. He is best known for his commission for the 72nd Street subway station in New York. He has been participating in Sculpture Key West since 2005.
Keith Nelson is co-founder of the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus, a national traveling theater based circus where his talents include sword swallowing, clowning, juggling, fire eating, Wild West skills, and administrative tasks.
In 2009 the duo embarked on a journey to cross each of the 2078 bridges in New York City and the pair has been making regular treks to cross each of them. The Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail Unicycle Tour provided the first opportunity for Nelson and Hickman to cross bridges separating Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico.
