Unicycle.com sprang to life on March 31, 1999 with little fanfare. It was supposed to be a little hobby business. Today, with franchise locations in 10 different countries, UDC is probably the largest retailer of unicycles in the world. Initially, no two people could have been more surprised than the owners, John and Amy Drummond. John began keeping a journal from the very beginning; when UDC celebrated its 10-year anniversary in 2009, he began compiling his notes into a book. The first edition ships around August 25, 2010.
Reinventing the Wheel: the Story of Unicycle.com takes the reader back to humble beginnings, when the Drummonds drew $700 from a "meager" savings account to launch the company, and even assembled unicycles on their living-room sofa. Their story is meant to inspire others to pursue their dreams. The 171-page book includes:
- inspiration and valuable insights for anyone starting a business
- practical advice--what to do and what not to do--for all entrepreneurs
- photos, facts and anecdotes from the one-wheeled world
With a foreword by unicycling great John Foss, Reinventing the Wheel also features special sections by author and unicyclist Carol Etter McLean, director of Unicycle Central of Minnesota, with Frequently Asked Questions on starting a unicycle club, tips for learning to ride, and the IRUS skill-building program developed by the Unicycling Club of America.
