Chuckanut Mountain & Larrabee

The days activities will be centered around Larrabee State Park

Join us in the Fairhaven historic district for breakfast as we fuel up for the days activities.

We will choose an available location near the day-use shelters and band shell area as a meet-up base to access the Chuckanut Mountain Recreation Area trail system via short unicycle rides or by vehicles. There is a band shell and restrooms at this location. Vehicle parking is byDiscovery Pass permit only in many location. Larrabee State park and the surrounding area have access to salt water beaches, tide pools, view points, overlooks, hiking and the Interurban Trail.

Please note that some of the rides scheduled for the Chuckanut Mountain trail system require advanced skills and endurance.

11:00 AM Morning Chuckanut Mountain Meet-up - after being transported up Cleator Road to the Fragrance Lake Road trail head. Descend Fragrance Lake trail (0.8 miles -300') to Fragrance Lake and circle around the north shore. Descend Two Dollar Trail (1.5 miles -430') to Cleator Road, and back to Larrabee by the Interurban trail. This ride is for advanced riders and will be on rough single track rock covered trails with drops, steep terrain, and muddy sections. Allow one hour or more to complete this 5 mile ride. Plan on stopping a moment on Two Dollar Trail to enjoy the water fall. If interest is shown by the group to increase the difficulty of the ride the drop off point will be moved up Cleator Road to the end and Double Diamond Trail (0.8 miles -800') will be taken to Fragrance Lake. We have planned this ride to be almost all down hill so those who are tired from the previous day(s) climbing will be able to enjoy some challenges without the added effort of climbing to get it.

1:00 Lunch Picnic We will meet-up for lunch at Larrabee State Park near the band shell and then choose a spot to enjoy. Bring your own picnic basket or brown bag lunch. Test out the many urban and natural features. Chuckanut sandstone features abound here. We may decide to move the lunch to one of the beaches depending on preferences.

2:00 PM Afternoon Chuckanut Mountain Meet-up - first preference if any hardy souls remain to complete an epic journey will be Upper Ridge Trail, Middle Ridge Trail, and Lower Ridge Trail (Map) from the top of Cleator Road to North Lost Lake Trail. Turn right a few feet to Salal Trail and then descend Lower Salal Trail, back to North Lost Lake Trail and come out at Arroyo Park for pickup or ride back to Larrabee on the Interurban Trail. This up and down ridge back trail is not all that well suited for unicyclist. But the multiple view points and 200' sandstone cliffs along this ridge with views looking both east (Mt Baker, the Sisters, and Cascades) and west (Puget Sound,the San Juan Islands, the Olympics, Vancouver Island) are remarkable. It is one of the local trail runners favorites. Distance to Arroyo Park is about 5.5 miles mostly descending. I've completed this uni-hike in two hours on well worn exhausted legs that climbed 3000 vertical feet of trail the day before. This route is up for discussion and a tamer ride may be what is actually completed.

South Galby & Lake Padden

Come share this 'no host' breakfast where Vince's crew will prepare each of us for the days activities.

We will choose an available location near or at the Rotary Shelter area as a meet-up base. We will have the 2.6 mile loop trail around the lake and 5.1 miles of trails south and east of the lake to ride. Via a short drive in vehicles the riders will access the south Galby (Galbraith mountain bike trail system). We will be next to a basketball court for unicycle basketball. The park also has a beach swimming area.

For those not experienced in difficult muni or rigorous climbing the park trails will be more than challenging to ride with varying trail types of easy, moderate and difficult skill requirements. Both urban and natural obstacles abound for showing your skills and progressing in ability.

We are hoping to have both young and older local unicyclist and their families participating along with the skilled and expert unicyclist found in and near Bellingham and visitors attracted to join us. We plan on having multiple ride leaders prepared to assist with every one having some one to ride with and places to ride within their abilities. Ride meet-ups will be scheduled throughout the day.

Please note that some of the rides scheduled for the south Galby require advanced skills and endurance.

10:30 AM Morning Padden Loop Trail Meet-up - from the playground/picnic area the riders will take the easy 2.6 mile loop scenic trail of predominantly rolling, gravel surface around Padden Lake. Plan on 30 to 45 minutes to complete this ride.

10:30 AM South Galby Morning Meet-up - after being transported to the Padden trailhead parking ride/walk the 1000+ foot elevation change to the towers. Stop to enjoy view then ride down Evolution, Unemployment Line, and Atomic Dog. From the Padden trailhead parking the ride will continue down through Padden Lake park back to the Rotary Shelter area by way of the Upper Padden Access Trail, part of the Upper Backcountry Loop, and Lower Backcountry Loop trails. This ride is for advanced riders and will be on free ride trail w/jumps, drops, wood features, and muddy sections. Allow two or more hours to complete this 6 mile ride.

11:45 AM Morning Padden Ridge/Loop Meet-up - from the playground/picnic area the riders will take the easy Padden Lake Loop Trail to the Padden Ridge Trail. The Padden Ridge Trail is a moderately difficult dirt trail through the woods south and east of the lake with mostly hilly terrain. The riders will connect back up with the Padden Loop Trail which is predominantly rolling, gravel surface and continue on around Padden Lake back to the starting point. Plan on 45 minutes to an hour to complete this ride of moderate and easy trails.

1:00 PM - Lunch & Barbecue Bring your favorite grill-able items, side dish, desert, and/or non-alcohol drinks to eat and share to this no host lunch. We will be outdoors with limited cooler space. Please be responsible for keeping your food from spoiling. You may want to bring your own shade and seating. Barbecue grills will be available to use.

2:00 PM - South Galby Afternoon Meet-up - after being transported to the Padden trailhead parking lot we will ride/walk the 700+ foot elevation change to the Red Rock. Make a left on 4000 to the Mullet trail head on the left. Ride Mullet clear through to Kaiser. Go left on Kaiser which turns into the Three Pigs (Straw, Stick, and Brick). From the Padden trailhead parking the ride will continue down through Padden Lake park back to the Rotary Shelter area by way of the Upper Padden Access Trail, part of the Upper Backcountry Loop, and Lower Backcountry Loop trails. This ride is for advanced riders and will be on free ride trail w/jumps, drops, wood features, and muddy sections. Allow two or more hours to complete this 6 mile ride.

2:00 PM Afternoon Lower Backcountry Loop Trail Meet-up - from the playground/picnic area the riders will negotiate the moderate skill level 2.5 mile backcountry trail. This trail has some sections which most likely will have many dismount and walk through the more difficult sections. Riders will encounter some steep accents, short steep descents, bumps, roots, rocks, and mud. Plan on up to 45 minutes to complete this ride.

3:30 PM Afternoon Upper Backcountry Loop Trail Meet-up - from the playground/picnic area the riders will negotiate the moderate skill Lower Backcountry Loop Trail to just past the fallen tree to the start of the Upper Backcountry Loop Trail. The ride will take the 0.7 mile difficult rated Upper Backcountry Loop Trail until it again rejoins the Lower Backcountry Loop trail. This ride route will have many sections which will test riders skills and where many may choose to dismount and walk through the more difficult sections. Riders will encounter some steep accents, short steep descents, bumps, roots, rocks, and mud. Plan on up to an hour or more to complete this 3 mile ride.

North Galby & Whatcom Falls Park

Enjoy a 'no host' pleasant morning morsel with us before getting started.

11:00 AM Morning North Galby Meet-up - will leave from Whatcom Falls entering Galby from Birch St. trailhead up Ridge Trail. The riders will have Family Fun Center, Cedar Dust, and Ewok Village to choose from depending on trail conditions, skill levels and rider preferences to choice from. The multitude of options will lead to either coming out Upper/Lower Bob's, SST, or back down the Ridge Trail. Plan on this ride taking up to two hours to complete.

1:30 PM Lunch at Whatcom Falls Park - Bring your own lunch or grab a Davinci Classic Sub from across the street and join in as the riders shares post ride joys. If it is hot we might ride down to the falls and soak in the pools of Whatcom Creek and watch any who like cliff diving play. After relaxing a bit enjoy any of the 5.5 miles of predominantly rolling, gravel surfaced scenic trails in the 241 acre park, play unicycle basketball on the available court, or show your stuff on the available urban obstacles.

2:30 PM Afternoon North Galby Meet-up - will leave from Whatcom Falls entering Galby from Birch St. trailhead up Ridge Trail out Cedar Dust, work our way up to Cabin, Golden Spike, down to SST, and back down Ridge Trail. Plan on this ride lasting up to three hours.
